Unattended candle sparks Wahiawa apartment fire

An unattended candle caused a fire that broke out at a unit of an apartment building in Wahiawa Thursday night.

Six units with 19 firefighters responded to the fire at 304 Ohai Pl. at approximately 10 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, the observed smoke and flames emerging from the front of a unit on the second floor, said Honolulu Fire Spokesman Capt. Scot Seguirant in a news release. Neighbors reportedly used fire hoses from the hose cabinets in the structure to control the flames.

Firefighters brought the fire under control at approximately 10:05 p.m. and extinguished it at about 10:20 p.m.

A male teenager who was in the unit at the time of the fire was treated for smoke inhalation.

A man and woman who also reside at the apartment were not home at the time of the fire.

Seguirant said the fire was determined to be accidental. Damage to the structure and its contents is estimated at 200,000.

The American Red Cross is assisting displaced residents.
