Former city transit official Mike Formby was sworn in Tuesday as the interim Honolulu City Council member for East Honolulu, a post he will hold until the “re-do” election between Trevor Ozawa and Tommy Waters.

Formby, who turns 61 later this month, will be hitting the ground running. Council Chairwoman Ann Kobayashi announced that he will chair the Public Safety and Welfare Committee and sit on the Budget, Zoning and Housing, Planning and Executive Matters and Legal Affairs committees.

City Clerk Glen Takahashi administered the oath in the Council committee room as Peter Lee, Formby’s husband, looked on.

Formby thanked Lee and former Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa, whom he served as chief of staff the past two years.

The Hawaii Supreme Court last month invalidated the results of the November election that saw Waters lose to Ozawa, the incumbent, by 22 votes. Waters challenged the vote and sought a recount, arguing that one should have been done automatically in an election this close.
