Baldwin’s Abraham Reinhardt (33) nearly intercepts a pass intended for Kailua’s Eric Lum during first-half action of a non-conference high school football game between the Kailua Surfriders and the Baldwin Bears in 2010.

Abraham Reinhardt, a 2013 Baldwin High graduate and redshirt-senior football player at Dixie State, died unexpectedly on Friday evening at a hospital in St. George, Utah.

“We are all incredibly saddened and shocked by Abraham’s passing,” Dixie State athletic director Jason Boothe said in a press release today. “Our hearts are broken. He always represented Dixie State University and our football program exceptionally well, but more importantly, he was an amazing young man.”

Reinhardt, 23, was an All-Maui Interscholastic League first-team selection as a senior safety in 2012. He played football at Riverside (Calif.) City College for two years and later attended Dixie State.

Last year, Reinhardt was an All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference first-team selection as a linebacker. He led the Trailblazers in tackles (79) and shared team-high honors in tackles for loss (13.5) and interceptions (three).

The team started spring practice on Tuesday.

“Trailblazer Nation is deeply grieved by the loss (of) Abraham, and our hearts go out to the Reinhardt family, his team, coaches, and friends,” Dixie State President Richard B. Williams said in the release. “We invite all DSU students, student-athletes, faculty and staff who have been impacted by this tragedy to utilize the counseling services and other resources available through our Health & Counseling Center.”

A candlelight vigil in honor of Reinhardt will take place on Monday at the DSU Clock Tower.
