Hawaii shortstop Maaki Yamazaki gets UC Irvine runner Brandon Lewis out at second on a throw from Hawaii first baseman Alex Baeza in the ninth inning.

Trenton Denholm pitched a three-hitter over eight innings to lead 19th-ranked UC Irvine to a 4-0 victory over Hawaii today at Les Murakami Stadium.

Denholm did not allow a hit until Brennen Hancock singled to open the UH fifth. Denholm, who was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 2017, walked two and struck out seven in eight shutout innings. He had three-ball counts to only four batters. Taylor Rashi pitched the ninth for the Anteaters.

Jake Palmer and Mike Peabody each had three hits, and Brendan Brooks hit his second solo homer in as many days for the Anteaters, who improved to 18-5 overall and 2-1 in the Big West. The ’Bows fell to 11-16 and 1-2.

Li‘i Pontes was the ’Bows’ second freshman starting pitcher of this three-games series. But Li‘i struggled with his control, allowing six hits and walking one in three innings.
