A tough question for immigrants

Hawaii is not joining the lawsuit over adding a citizenship question to the 2020 U.S. Census form. But a similar question is being raised in that suit as when this state challenged the Trump administration’s Muslim travel ban: How much discretion does the administration have to set these policies?

Ahead of the high court ruling, Hawaii immigrant advocates worry that asking “Are you a citizen?” may deter many from answering the Census. That means the feds may underestimate the need for support funds here.

A solemn anniversary at Normandy

Seventy-five years ago today and half a world away, 160,000 Allied troops invaded Western Europe against Nazi Germany forces, in what would be a major turning point in World War II. On D-Day alone, June 6, 1944, the storming of the Normandy coast left more than 4,410 Allied troops dead, with over 9,000 wounded or missing.

Today, President Donald Trump, Queen Elizabeth II and 15 other heads of state gathered at England’s Portsmouth Naval Memorial to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day, along with more than 300 veterans. On this solemn anniversary, in honor of those who died for freedom, take the time to learn more about D-Day.
