H-1 West lanes reopen in Halawa after fatal crash

UPDATE:

A 52-year-old man was killed this morning after a van struck him on the H-1 freeway in the Halawa area.

The deadly crash occurred near the Radford pedestrian bridge overpass at about 4 a.m.

Police said the man’s blue 1994 Mazda pickup truck stalled and was on the westbound shoulder of the freeway when the driver exited the truck. He was standing next to his vehicle when, for unknown reasons, a black 2004 Lincoln Navigator operated by a 30-year-old woman swerved into the shoulder lane and struck the stalled truck.

Police said the man attempted to move out of the way when a white 2005 Toyota Sienna van driven by a 60-year-old man traveling on the westbound lanes of the freeway hit him.

The Mazda driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said speed, drugs or alcohol were not involved in the crash.

This is the 35th traffic-related fatality on Oahu this year compared to 38 at the same time last year.

UPDATE: 8:35 a.m.

All lanes of the H-1 westbound in the Halawa area have been reopened, according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
