Joseph Soul’s dreams of becoming this season’s winner on the NBC reality singing contest “The Voice” moved a step forward Tuesday, even though the 34-year-old Makakilo resident was defeated by his Team Kelly teammate Desz during the second night of the competition’s Battle Round.

Moments after their coach, Kelly Clarkson, named Desz as the winner of their battle — a duet performance of “If You Don’t Know Me by Now,” the 1972 R&B classic by Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes, featuring Teddy Pendergrass — coach Gwen Stefani kept Soul’s hopes alive by “stealing” him for Team Gwen.

Stefani had described herself as a “fan” before Clarkson announced Desz was the winner.

“Your voice for me is so beautiful,” she said as the coaches were commenting on the performances. “It’s so high and it’s so pretty, and then you were taking it even higher going into your head voice, so I think you are super talented. … (Your) voice itself is incredible and I’m a fan.”

Clarkson tweeted afterward, “I’m literally SO happy!!” that Stefani had “stolen” him.

The Battle Round concludes Monday. Knockout Rounds between team members — with Soul now a member of Team Stefani — begin Tuesday.
