Tradewinds light across Hawaii, but expected to return Friday

Tradewinds remain light across the state today but are expected to return on Friday and stick around for the weekend, forecasters said, as a stationary front northwest of Kauai fizzles out.

The National Weather Service said afternoon sea breezes will bring increasing clouds and brief showers over the interior areas of isles. Light to moderate trades will prevail on Hawaii island and west Maui.

Today’s forecast is mostly sunny, with isolated afternoon showers and highs from 81 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Tonight’s skies become partly cloudy with lows from 69 to 74.

Variable winds remain at up to 15 mph through tonight.

Surf should remain below advisory levels along all shores for the next few days, but overlapping, north-northwest swells are expected this weekend.

Surf along north facing shores falls from 5 to 7 feet this afternoon to 4 to 6 feet on Friday, while surf on west facing shores remains 3 to 5 feet today through Friday.

Surf along south and east facing shores remain at 2 to 4 feet today and Friday.

A high surf advisory may be necessary by Sunday due to the overlapping northwest swells.

A “shot of breezy tradewinds” is expected on Saturday, bringing clouds and passing showers to the windward and mauka sides. Winds are expected to slowly turn from east to southeast again Sunday as a front and low pressure move into the Central Pacific from the west.

Another record high, meanwhile, was recorded in Kahului on Wednesday. A record high of 89 degrees on Wednesday surpassed the previous one of 88 set for that day in 2013.

On Wednesday, a high of 86 in Lihue tied with the previous record for that day set in 1995.

It was Kahului’s second record high temperature so far this month, in addition to two record high matches. It was Lihue’s third record high match this month.
