The Honolulu-bound lanes of the H-3 freeway are shut down through early Monday morning so crews can replace a key component that runs the length of that side of the roadway, transportation officials said.

The closure started at 9 p.m. Friday, and the town-bound lanes will reopen at 4 a.m. Monday, according to a state Department of Transportation news release.

The closure will enable crews to replace what is called an “expansion” joint — points along the viaduct that allow for the concrete to naturally expand and contract due to swings in temperature, the release said.

Drivers are encouraged to use Pali and Likelike highways as alternate routes, and expect delays because of the work.
