For the second consecutive year, Hawaii was voted second in the Big West women’s basketball preseason media poll and senior Shawna-Lei Kuehu was named to the preseason all-conference team.

UH picked up 101 points in the poll and received one first-place vote to finish behind preseason favorite and defending conference champion Cal State Northridge (125 points, 13 first-place votes).

The Rainbow Wahine were voted second in last year’s poll and ended the season third in the Big West standings at 17-14 overall and 10-6 in conference play.

UH is followed in this year’s poll by Cal Poly, UC Davis, Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine, UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara.

Kuehu, a second-team All-Big West selection last season, returns for her sixth year and was joined on the preseason all-conference team by Cal State Northridge guards Ashlee Guay and Janae Sharpe, Cal Poly guard Ariana Elegado, UC Riverside guard Brittany Crain and UC Davis forward Sydnee Fipps.

The Wahine make their public debut in the Green vs. White scrimmage on Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center. The scrimmage is scheduled for 7 p.m. following the Rainbow Wahine volleyball match against UC Santa Barbara, which starts at 4.

UH takes on UH-Hilo in an exhibition game on Oct. 29 and opens the season at Colorado State on Nov. 14.
