Hawaii sweeps UC Riverside to win series
Ethan Lopez went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and Hawaii swept a doubleheader against UC Riverside to win the series with a 5-4 victory in the second game today at Les Murakami Stadium.
Chayce Ka’aua singled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning of a 2-1 win in the first game for the Rainbow Warriors (21-26, 10-11 Big West), who had lost 11 of 13.
Lopez had three hits on the day to extend his hitting streak to 13 games for UH, which improved to 6-10 in one-run games and 9-0 in BWC play when scoring at least five runs.
Matt Valencia worked out of a jam with a runner on third and one out in the eighth inning of the first game and finished off the ninth to earn his third save.
Brendan Hornung (4-7) allowed three runs on 10 hits in six innings of the second game to pick his first win since April 1 against UC Irvine.
Cody Culp worked the final three innings to earn his fourth save.
UC Riverside dropped to 21-27 overall and 8-10 in the Big West to fall behind Hawaii, which is tied with Cal State Northridge for fifth place heading into its final BWC series of the season at league-leading Cal State Fullerton starting Friday.
Vince Fernandez hit two homers in Game 2 for UCR.
