Rainbow Wahine basketball beats CSUN

The University of Hawaii women’s basketball team got a measure of payback for a loss to CSUN in last year’s Big West tournament championship game with a 77-50 rout tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Rainbow Wahine senior Ashleigh Karaitiana scored 12 of her team-high 17 points in the first half and Kalei Adolpho and Megan Huff added 12 points each in the post in UH’s Big West home opener.

The Wahine (9-7, 2-1 Big West) shot 55.6 percent overall, went 6-for-10 from 3 point range — with Karaitiana connecting all three of her attempts — and outscored the Matadors (2-14, 0-2) 38-8 in the paint in a dominant performance.

All 13 players saw action for the Wahine and 11 contributed to UH’s highest point total of the season.

Karaitiana finished 6-for-7 from the field while Adolpho was 6-for-9. Destiny King led UH with eight rebounds and tied Briana Harris for team-high honors with four assists.

CSUN, which replaced all five starters off last year’s Big West tournament championship team, was led by Serafina Maulupe’s 17 points.

The Wahine close the homestand against first-place UC Riverside (10-7, 3-0) on Saturday at the Sheriff Center.

Great win. Both twins in the game, just use first names. Like little Matt, big Matt. Whose that player on the bench, is she one of the Australian players.
