Kauai police identified the driver who died after he was trapped in a sports utility vehicle that went off the road, struck a tree and fell 30 feet into an embankment in Wailua on Sunday.

Richard Dale Johnson, 58, of Kapaa died after the white Ford sports utility vehicle he was driving went off Kuamo’o Road Sunday morning, police said.

A motorcyclist driving by at 8:30 a.m. heard Johnson’s cries for help, police said. The motorcyclist checked the embankment and saw Johnson who told him he had been stuck in his vehicle for several hours.

Police said the motorcyclist headed to a spot where he could get a cell phone signal and called 911. When he returned, Johnson didn’t respond when he called out to him. Firefighters arrived, rappelled down the embankment and found Johnson had died, police said.

The investigation on the crash is ongoing.
