MAALAEA, Maui — Firefighters are monitoring a stubborn brush fire in the Maalaea area of Maui that has burned about 6,200 acres in the five days since it started.

Maui county spokeswoman Mahina Martin said the fire was 90 percent contained as of midday Friday. No injuries were reported and no structures remained threatened.

The fire prompted the Tuesday evacuation of about 100 people and the closure of Honoapiilani Highway after it started Monday night.

Nearly 100 county and state firefighters have fought the fire.
