University of Hawaii considers telescope proposal

The University of Hawaii Board of Regents is deciding whether to build the world’s largest telescope at Mauna Kea’s summit.

The board is scheduled to discuss the Thirty Meter Telescope at a meeting this morning.

If the board clears the project, the telescope managers are expected to seek a permit to build from the Board of Land and Natural Resources.

A consortium of Canadian and California universities is heading the development of the telescope.

Japan, China, and India have also signed on to participate.

The University of Hawaii must evaluate the project because it owns the lease for the land on which the telescope is due to be built.
