Big Island police are investigating the destruction of more than 8,500 papaya trees in Puna, with damage estimated at $100,000.

Officers responded to the report at 10:33 a.m. yesterday at a farm near Route 132, in Alohalani.

The trees, ranging in height from 6 to 10 feet, had been cut to the ground, police said.
