Union, gay caucus endorse different gubernatorial candidates

A large public union and the Gay Lesbian and Transgendered Caucus of the state Democratic Party announced endorsements of different candidates for governor today.

The United Public Workers union, which represents more than 13,000 civil service workers in Hawaii, endorsed Mufi Hannemann for governor, the Hannemann campaigns said on their Facebook page.

The union cited Hannemann’s commitment to working people in its endorsement.

Meanwhile the gay caucus cited Neil Abercrombie’s track record of “standing up for civil rights” for its endorsement and said it takes “brave leadership” to end discrimination.

The caucus’ endorsement comes the day after Gov. Linda Lingle vetoed a bill to allow same-sex couples to form civil unions.

Abercrombie supported the bill. Hannemann says the issue should be put to a vote as a general election ballot measure.
