Man held in terroristic threatening

A 43-year-old man was charged yesterday in connection with threatening to kill his 46-year-old girlfriend last month in Moiliili, police said.

Melvin Nunuha of Kuilei Street was being held in lieu of $25,000 bail on charges of first-degree terroristic threatening and abuse.

Police said Nunuha and the woman were arguing at their home when he assaulted her and threatened to kill her with a dangerous weapon the afternoon of June 26.

Nunuha was arrested Wednesday at his home.

Suspect allegedly attacks teenager

A 21-year-old Ala Moana man surrendered to police Wednesday after he allegedly assaulted a 13-year-old boy last week in McCully.

Police said the man punched the boy once in the face and once in the rib cage on July 9.

After the boy complained of pain in both areas, he was taken to a hospital, where it was found he had sustained a mild concussion and a broken cheekbone.

The man turned himself in at about 1:10 p.m. Wednesday and was booked on suspicion of second- and third-degree assault. He was later released pending investigation.

Boy allegedly stabs man in fight

A 17-year-old boy was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of stabbing a 20-year-old man during a brawl last week in Honolulu, police said.

The boy stabbed the man once with a knife during a fight involving several men at about 1 a.m. July 5, police said.

The man was trying to help his friends when he was injured, police said. He was taken to a hospital for his injuries.

Police arrested the boy on suspicion of first-degree assault.

Hurt hunter is in custody

A 32-year-old Big Island man recovering from a hunting accident was arrested for allegedly violating federal parole by possessing a weapon and ammunition.

Big Island police learned that Jarret Kaneshiro allegedly had been illegally hunting pigs on private land with four others when he was accidentally shot in the chest. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center and subsequently flown to Oahu in critical condition.

A search of the man’s Mountain View home and his car uncovered 11.8 grams of marijuana buds as well as ammunition.

He was on federal parole when he was shot, and was arrested after being released from the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. He is now in custody at the Federal Detention Center near Honolulu Airport.

Additional criminal trespass cases have been initiated against the man and four other hunters who were illegally hunting at ML Macadamia Orchards on June 19, police said.

After the shooting, landowners formed a committee to work with police to address the problem of illegal hunting on private land.

Sale of land spurs dispute

HILO » The Hawaii County Board of Ethics says it lacks jurisdiction to act on a complaint filed by a woman seeking a moratorium on the sale of 737 acres of public land in Hamakua.

Shelley Stephens brought the complaint against Mayor Billy Kenoi and the County Council.

She held at a sometimes contentious board meeting Wednesday that not enough had been done to find the true heirs of former Hamakua Sugar Co. land that the county acquired in a 1994 tax settlement.

Stephens and eight sympathizers cited Hawaiian kingdom law, biblical commandments against stealing and coveting, and century-old perceived injustices.
