The man accused of stabbing a business associate and setting his Pearl City house on fire appeared in Honolulu District Court yesterday morning to face charges of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree arson and criminal property damage.

Daniel Silverman, 41, kept his head bowed during most of his initial court appearance. He did not speak as he stood before District Judge Catherine Remigio, who scheduled a preliminary hearing for Tuesday.

He is charged with attempted murder and arson for allegedly stab- bing business associate David Davis and setting his home on fire.

Silverman allegedly stabbed David Davis, 52, several times and set fire to Davis’ home while the victim was still inside at about 1 a.m. Monday.

Davis, a former owner of 24 7 Towing in Waipahu, was found with severe burn and stab wounds in the back yard of his burning Pearl City house early Monday. Davis told police he was attacked by Silverman, who was captured that night in Waikiki.

Davis, who was in critical condition at a burn unit, apparently survived the attack by breaking and jumping through his bathroom window because the fire had engulfed the front of his house and stored materials blocked the back door.

Silverman stood next to a public defender yesterday morning, dressed in a white jail-house jumpsuit and leg restraints. He hopped when he walked into the courtroom.

There were no family members or friends of either the suspect or the victim in the courtroom.

Silverman is being held on $500,000 bail.

Police listed Silverman’s home address as the same Awanei Street address in Waipahu as the 24 7 Towing business.

Davis told police that night that "he and Silverman had recent business dealings that ended on bad terms," according to court documents.
