Campaign signs compete on same property fence

Even when the roadside campaign hordes pack it in at the end of each rush hour, the signs of the times remain — usually posted on chain-link fences.

All manner of election-year signs are left semi-permanently on private properties, primarily along major traffic arterials. Folks at the Outdoor Circle, the champions of Hawaii’s strict sign laws, are tearing their hair out because the law gives much more leeway to campaign signs, in deference to free political speech.

This type of political speech seems especially free. Several homes have been spotted with campaign signs virtually papering over the property fence, Mufi Hannemann’s placards right next to those for Neil Abercrombie, amid a riot of campaign messaging.

Could this be free enterprise at work? Maybe fence rentals have become the newest seasonal cottage industry.

Forget those fickle fans; Colt’s still a local favorite

From the time he donned a Washington Redskin uniform in 2008 until being cut this week, Colt Brennan was reported to be a "fan favorite" in the nation’s capital, although rarely used in the lineup. So it was interesting when an online poll of Washington Post readers following the release of the former Hawaii Rainbow Warrior, still endeared in the islands, asked, "Should the Redskins have cut QB Colt Brennan?

Alas, of more than 4,500 respondents, 68 percent voted "yes" and 31 percent loyally answered "no."
