Patient allegedly attacks paramedic

A city paramedic was assaulted by a man she was tending to in an ambulance Monday morning.

The paramedic, 29, sustained bruises to her torso. She was treated at the hospital, but did not have to stay overnight, said Dr. Jim Ireland, acting director of the city Department of Emergency Services.

The suspect, 40, of no known address, was apparently picked up from a Waipahu residence at about 7:30 a.m. and became combative while being treated en route to Hawaii Medical Center West, police records said.

The man allegedly punched the paramedic three times in the chest, police said.

He was arrested at Hawaii Medical Center West for alleged second-degree assault. There were also two outstanding warrants against him and he is being held at the Alapai Street cellblock.

Citing health privacy laws, neither police nor paramedics would disclose the original reason the man was being taken to the hospital.

Ireland called the attack unfortunate but extremely rare.

Drowning victim ID’d as Californian

The Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man who apparently drowned Monday off Ala Moana Beach Park as Yun Tim Choy, 91, of San Francisco.

City lifeguards pulled Choy from near-shore waters at 3:31 p.m. and tried to resuscitate him until paramedics arrived. He was taken in critical condition to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police arrested a Wahiawa man after he allegedly entered a parked vehicle and assaulted a woman at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The man, 44, whom police described as the victim’s landlord at a California Avenue apartment complex, apparently was upset that she wanted to move out.

The suspect was found in the nearby Center Pharmacy parking lot and arrested for alleged unauthorized entry, police said. The woman, 24, sustained minor injuries, police said.
