Brigham Young-Hawaii assistant coach Brandyn Akana has been officially added to the staff of new University of Hawaii men’s basketball coach Gib Arnold, UH confirmed today.

Akana is the third and final assistant hired by Arnold, joining Walter Roese and Benjy Taylor.

“This is an exciting move for me and my family,” Akana said in a UH statement. “Coach Arnold is a well-rounded and respected coach who brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and passion to the game of basketball. I look forward to learning from him and his staff and I’m excited for the opportunity to contribute to the success of the Rainbow Warrior program.”

The former BYUH player and Molokai native brings local flair to the diverse coaching staff, combining the Brazilian background of Roese, the Chicago-based expertise of Taylor and Australian knowledge of director of operations Scott Fisher.

Akana is the brother of former UH player Jarinn Akana.
