Night doubles semis set

Two former champions and a few new faces will be on the Kailua Racquet Club court tonight in the semifinals of the Blue Moon Men’s Night Doubles.

Former Hawaii Pacific All-Americans Stefan Pampulov—now the Hawaii Pacific University coach—and Jan Axel Tribler upset two-time champs Michael Bruggemann and Erich Chen 6-3, 6-4 in a Wednesday quarterfinal. Pampulov and Tribler play three-time champs Minh Le and Wei Yu Su tonight in one semifinal.

Tribler has lost in the Night Doubles final the past four years with Mikael Maatta, who recently had knee surgery. In 2006, ’07 and ’08, they fell to Le and Su, who ousted University of Hawaii senior Daniel Llarenas and his former teammate Jeff Fitch 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday.

Defending champs Ikaika Jobe and Dennis Lajola face former Dartmouth teammates Jesse Paer and Neal Bobba in the other semifinal.

Matches begin at 6 p.m. The winners play in tomorrow’s final, which follows a third-place pro-set match that starts at 6 p.m.

Le and Su are part of a Hawaiian Isles Tennis Play Tennis! youth event tomorrow at the Boys and Girls Club Spalding Clubhouse. They will lead a clinic from 10:30 a.m. to noon and also be available for autographs and photos.

Participation is free for Boys and Girls Club members ($1 annual membership). Registration is required. Contact Dickson Wong (949-4743 or dwong@bgch.com). Parking is available at Washington Middle School off King Street.
