Suspect critical after police shooting

A 23-year-old man shot by police on Sheridan Street early Sunday remained in critical condition at the Queen’s Medical Center last night.

The suspect was shot in the lower torso by an officer after police ordered him to put down his semiautomatic pistol when police saw him shooting at another man, said Honolulu police spokeswoman Michelle Yu.

"The suspect refused and turned toward one of the officers, who fired at the suspect several times," Yu said.

Meanwhile, police are seeking another suspect, who fled the scene. He is described as Asian, about 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds, with black hair.

Police said the two men allegedly terrorized four men at about 5:40 a.m. in the parking lot of the Little Seoul karaoke bar at Sheridan and Rycroft streets.

Brush fire closes road in Waialua

Police shut down Kaukonahua Road yesterday as firefighters battled a brush fire near the "S turn" in the Waialua area.

Kaukonahua was shut down at Thompson’s Corner on the makai end and at the Kamehameha Highway-Wilikina Drive and Kamehameha-Kaukonahua intersections on the mauka side at about 2:15 p.m.

Honolulu Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said the fire has so far burned about an acre and that there is no threat to life or property. The Fire Department asked police to close the road due to smoke and fire apparatus in the area, Seelig said.

The fire is on the Poamoho side of Kaukonahua. A brush fire occurred in the same area Aug. 6 on the Kaena side.

1,000-acre fire keeps road closed

Saddle Road on the Big Island remained closed yesterday as a brush fire at the Army’s Pohakuloa Training Area continued to spread.

According to U.S. Army Garrison, Hawaii, the fire began at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday a quarter-mile east of the training area’s main gate near Mauna Kea State Park. The fire has burned up to 1,000 acres.

No training activity was taking place near where the fire started, an Army news release said.

Police said the fire, near the 33-mile marker, has closed Saddle Road between the eight-mile marker, above the top entrance of Kaumana subdivision, and the Route 190 intersection in Waimea.

Four helicopters, four bulldozers and federal and state fire crews are trying to contain the blaze, which is spreading to the northeast.

No structures were threatened. The cause has not yet been determined.
