Two weeks after it had been on the verge of announcing it was coming to the Western Athletic Conference, Brigham Young University instead announced it will leave the Mountain West Conference to go independent in football and move most of its other sports to the West Coast Conference.

A press conference is scheduled for tomorrow.

BYU will begin competing as an independent in football for the 2011-12 season.

BYU had been working on an agreement with the WAC until Fresno State and Nevada bolted to the MWC on Aug. 18.

BYU had until today to declare an intention to leave the MWC in order to move for 2011-’12.

BYU declined further comment until tomorrow’s press conference.
