Kauai develops plan to protect seabirds
Kauai plans to limit lighting at public facilities as much as possible to protect endangered seabirds.
The county outlines the aim in a Seabird Habitat Conservation Plan it submitted to authorities Tuesday after three years of discussion with state and federal agencies.
The plan includes a previously announced policy to hold high school football games during the day instead of at night during the fall fledgling season starting Sept. 15.
Kauai’s seabirds have been dying at alarming rates in part because bright lights confuse them.
Newell’s shearwater birds rely on moonlight to travel out to sea after they’re born. But bright lights cause them to become disoriented and fall to the ground.
