Police arrested a 27-year-old man who allegedly hit another man over the head with a pipe after a disagreement over a cigarette In Kakaako.

Police said that on Sunday afternoon the suspect asked for a cigarette from a 50-year-old man, who complied by handing the cigarette he had been smoking to the suspect. That  angered the suspect who made a “hand gesture” toward the victim, police said.

The 50-year-old man grew frightened and ran to a phone booth to call 911, police said. That’s when the suspect hit the victim over the head with a pipe, according to police.

Police arrested the suspect on Ahui Street near Point Panic at 1:30 p.m. Sunday for assault and interfering with reporting an emergency. He was released pending investigation.
