Masked gunmen order customers on the floor during Waikele bank robbery
Honolulu police are calling yesterday’s armed bank heist in Waikele highly unusual.
Two masked men, armed with handguns, ordered customers to get down on the floor while they robbed the Waikele Bank of Hawaii, police said.
“This hasn’t happened for the last 15 or 20 years,” said police Capt. Kent Harada.
Bank robbers in Hawaii often use demand notes when approaching a teller and no weapon is usually seen, or they are discreetly tucked in the waistband when displayed, Harada said.
In yesterday’s Waikele bank robbery shortly before 4 p.m., the two men pulled up in front of the bank and got out of a small, white car, police said.
They entered the bank and ordered the customers down on the floor.

One of the two robbers guarded the exit, while the other went to the teller and took an undisclosed amount of money, police said.
The men jumped into the white car and fled in the Honolulu direction, police said.
