Official chides Colbert over House testimony
WASHINGTON » The House’s No. 2 Democratic leader says comedian Stephen Colbert’s testimony last week on immigration was "inappropriate" and "an embarrassment."
Democratic Rep. Zoe Lofgren of California invited Colbert to appear before the House Judiciary Committee. But other Democrats were not happy about her decision.
The committee chairman, Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., asked Colbert to leave the room at the beginning of the hearing because the comedian had no expertise in farm labor issues or immigration policy.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland told "Fox News Sunday" yesterday that he thought the episode was more of an embarrassment to Colbert than to the House. But, he added, "I think it was inappropriate" that he testified.
Lofgren spokesman Pedro Ribeiro declined comment yesterday.

Green Day rocker to star in own musical
NEW YORK » Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong is briefly joining the cast of "American Idiot," the Broadway musical he helped create based on the band’s 2004 Grammy Award-winning album.
The show’s producers announced yesterday that Armstrong will take over the role of drug dealer St. Jimmy for eight performances, tomorrow through Sunday, before his band kicks off a South American tour.
It’s the Broadway debut for Armstrong, who composed and co-wrote the musical. He temporarily replaces actor Tony Vincent, who’s on leave until Oct. 12 for what producers call a personal family matter.
The show follows an antihero who flees a deadening suburbia and descends into sex, drugs and fierce guitar playing in his quest to find himself in the big city.
