American Red Cross volunteers delivered meals, water and flashlights to residents in a 21-story Ala Moana condominium who have been without power, and in some cases without water, since Wednesday because of an electrical fire.

A Hawaiian Electric spokesman said that a crew had changed a transformer at the Princess Leilani apartments at 1561 Kanunu St. Wednesday. But when the power was restored, the building’s electrical equipment caught fire.

A spokesman for Hawaiiana Management, which manages the condominium, said the electrical contractor it hired hopes to complete the repair work soon.

Volunteers with the American Red Cross walked up the 21-story building Tuesday night to distribute 60 cases of water to residents. Volunteers also went door to door to check on residents’ needs.

Volunteers also stationed themselves in the dark stairwell with flashlights to givet to residents so they could safely get upstairs.

Yesterday afternoon, the Red Cross returned to the building to provide meals and snacks to residents.
