Mo-ped noise betrays rider’s escape

A suspected mo-ped thief was unable to make a quiet getaway Thursday night, thwarted by a loud muffler that led to his capture.

Police said they stopped a 47-year-old man on a mo-ped on Date Street just after midnight because of noise complaints from a nearby business. A check revealed the mo-ped was reported stolen, and the Waianae man was arrested, police said.

3 rescued after boat capsizes

Coast Guard crews rescued three people after their vessel overturned off Nawiliwili Harbor at about 3 a.m. yesterday.

Search and rescue coordinators from Coast Guard Sector Honolulu received a distress call from the captain of the 25-foot pleasure craft at about 2:30 a.m. Coordinators relayed the information to search and rescue crews on Kauai.

Rescue crews arrived on scene at 3:40 a.m. and found two people in the water near the capsized boat, about one mile south of the harbor. The rescue team picked them up and transferred them to a 31-foot utility boat.

The boat’s captain reported there was a third person who had jumped overboard and tried to swim to shore. The third person was found on the breakwater, signaling the rescue crew with his flashlight.

No injuries were reported.
