Wastewater spill flows into Waipahu canal

Signs are being posted this morning warning of contamination from a wastewater spill in Waipahu.

The state Clean Water Branch said 8,250 gallons of wastewater went into a canal from a manhole on Lehua Way yesterday.

The city said the wastewater escaped from an eight-inch clay pipe clogged with grease. The spill was reported at 3:15 p.m. and secured by 6 p.m.

The public is advised to stay out of the canal that runs between Waipahu Field and Ted Makalena Golf course, follows the Pearl Harbor bike path, and empties into Middle Loch. Affected areas also include areas of Middle Loch adjacent to the canal mouth.
