Fourth-ranked Hawaii’s first volleyball match in two weeks — and first home match in three weeks — is against San Jose State tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Six of the top 10 teams lost last week, earning UH first-place votes in the AVCA Top 25 poll for the first time since the 2005 preseason. In the Western Athletic Conference regular season, the Wahine (14-1, 4-0) are on an NCAA-best 29-match winning streak. It would be a huge upset for that to end this weekend.

The Spartans (8-12, 3-4) feature four players (Alex Akana, Brianna Amian, Caitlin Andrade and Leilani Marple) and an assistant coach (Annie Feller) from Hawaii. They are immensely better than last year, when they won just once. But they haven’t defeated UH since 1993, a skid of 38 straight matches.

Fresno State (7-10, 2-4) visits Sunday. It has never beaten UH in 47 tries.

» Basketball’s ‘Ohana Hoopfest will start at approximately 9:15 tonight, following the match. Volleyball fans are encouraged to stay. Fans who are not attending volleyball can enter for free near the conclusion of the match. The women’s and men’s teams will be introduced at the Hoopfest, which will also include celebrity games, skits and a UH student half-court shot contest, along with autographs.

» Kawika Shoji, the 2010 national player of the year when he led Stanford to the NCAA championship, is headed to Finland to play professionally. Dave Shoji’s oldest son is a setter. He plans to return to the U.S. national program in the spring.

» In this week’s national statistics, Hawaii ranks 16th in blocking (2.72 per set), 26th in kills (13.98), 29th in hitting (.263) and 33rd in assists (12.94). Sophomore Brittany Hewitt still leads the country in blocks (1.77). Kanani Danielson is 12th in kills (4.53) and 14th in points (5.06).

» UH leads the WAC in hitting, assists, kills and opponent hitting (.145). In WAC matches only, Elizabeth Ka’aihue is averaging 5.75 digs a set. Her overall average of 4.57 has her on pace to break the UH record of 4.22. Danielson’s streak of 21 straight matches with 10 or more kills ended at NMSU when she collected nine kills and 11 digs.

» Hawaii is back on the road next week for matches at Idaho on Thursday, Boise State next Saturday and Utah State on Oct. 25. The Idaho (5 p.m. Hawaii time) and USU (4 p.m.) matches will be live on ESPNU.
