A fire in Waikele last night appears to be suspicious in origin and is the third brush fire in two days deemed suspicious in Central Oahu, according to the Honolulu Fire Department.

The brush fire started about 9:15 p.m. at Corp Field, 94-801 Kamehameha Highway, said Honolulu fire Capt. Earle Kealoha.

Three engine companies and two tankers brought the fire under control at 9:37 p.m. and contained it about an hour later.

Fire crews had to drive off-road to reach the fire, which was in the same area of previous fires, Kealoha said.

There were no damages.

On Wednesday, firefighters extinguished two small brush fires at Wahiawa Freshwater State Recreational Area that were difficult to reach. Firefighters had to drag hoses about 500 yards and carry water in backpacks to fight the larger of the two fires, which burned a 3,000-square-foot area.

Firefighters are still investigating the cause of two fires yesterday in Pearl City and Waipahu.

The first fire destroyed six cars at a salvaging company on Leonui Street in Waipahu. Employees were removing gasoline and other fluids from vehicles when the fire began about noon, although the cause is still being investigated, Kealoha said yesterday.

The second fire started about 12:30 p.m. in an abandoned, two-story building on Kamehameha Highway in Pearl City. The fire was confined to the first floor of the building, which was apparently being used by homeless people.

No one was injured in any of the fires.
