Good Samaritan helps police catch bike theft suspect

Police and a good Samaritan chased down a suspected bike thief in the downtown/Chinatown area late Wednesday morning.

An off-duty officer saw what he believed to be a bike theft in progress, police said. As he approached, the suspect lunged at the officer with a bike lock and then took off on foot Ewa on King Street.

A good Samaritan on a bicycle joined the chase. The suspect scuffled with the man, 52, and also attempted to steal his bike and hit him with the bike lock, police said.

The officer and bicyclist caught up and detained the suspect at North Nimitz Highway and River Street until patrol officers arrived.

The suspect, a 54-year-old Waipahu man, is being held pending robbery charges.
