Tourists rescued from fern forest near Volcano

Big Island firefighters rescued two California tourists last night after they got lost while hiking in Kahauale’a Natural Area Reserve in Volcano on the Big Island.

Hawaii County firefighters  said a woman, 31, and man, 27, lost their way in a hapu’u fern forest while trying to hike out of the  trail that leads to Pu’u O’o Vent.

After calling 911 about 7:50 p.m., firefighters used GPS in their phone to locate the hikers about a mile east of the main trail. Rescuers had to clear a new path in order to reach the lost party.

Neither hiker was injured.
