A modest low-key rally to restore a little sanity

Discourse is largely civil in Honolulu, so we can have a rational discussion of why the turnout at Saturday’s local "Rally to Restore Sanity" event was so paltry. Here are some possible reasons:

» It was competing with a national event, featuring comics Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and an all-star cast. This one featured (ugh!) actual candidates.

» This is the Aloha State, after all: We don’t need to rally for sanity.

» Successful rallies take planning. At the start time of this one, the tent was still being set up.

There probably needs to be an "all of the above" option here.

First there’s Boise, then there’s destiny

This is good stress.

It is what you get when you thump Idaho, 45-10, improve to 5-0 in Western Athletic Conference games and earn a Hawaii Bowl invitation as you drive toward a showdown with No. 2-ranked Boise State — in which you will be a 20-plus-point underdog.

Hawaii, the preseason pick to finish fifth in the WAC, is on a roll. We’re not ready to say destiny’s lining up with the Warriors, but they are definitely making magic on the field.

This could be their last game on the blue turf. What better stage for a grand parting performance?
