Eric Liaw of Punahou School won fourth place overall in the 2010 International Biology Olympiad in July in Changwon, South Korea, against 233 students from 58 countries. He received a gold medal at the USA Biology Olympiad in June and represented the United States, along with three other gold medalists, at the IBO. The United States won first place as a team.

A new partnership between the Hawaii State Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Verizon will train Hawaii domestic violence prevention advocates and law enforcement personnel on how the latest wireless technology can help keep abuse survivors safe. The seminars are funded through a $10,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation.

The Triangle Coalition for Science and Technology Education selected Buffy Cushman-Patz, a science and math teacher at La Pietra Hawaii School for Girls, as a 2010-2011 Einstein Fellow. Cushman-Patz is one of 32 teachers who won the opportunity to serve in the national education or public policy arenas.
