Fire causes $20,000 damage to Saint-Germain Bakery in Kalihi

Operations and deliveries are expected to be back on schedule tomorrow at Saint-Germain Bakery in Kalihi following an early morning fire that caused about $20,000 in damage to the building and contents.

The fire began before 1 a.m. at a 1930 Dillingham Blvd. and was under control within a minute of firefighters arrival.

Lorraine Yamada, the bakery’s administrative manager. said the fire damaged an oven exhaust vent, which serves two ovens in the three-story bakery.

She said production and deliveries were delayed for about an hour and half this morning since many of the bakery products were damaged and had to be remade. Saint Germain has seven retail and wholesale outlets.

However, bakery operations should be back to normal today.

A fire investigator determined the fire began in the duct system used to direct heat and smoke from the ovens. Flames spread to roofing material and insulation on the roof.

All occupants of the building escaped without injury.

About 25 firefighters from four companies, including three engine and one ladder company, and a battalion chief, responded to the blaze.
