UH forming endowment to honor Obama’s mother

The University of Hawaii Foundation is in the latter stages of forming an endowment fund that would honor Stanley Ann Dunham, the mother of President Barack Obama.

The endowment has not been publicly launched — though the UH Foundation and its partner in the endeavor, the East-West Center, plan to do so early next year.

The fund is in the name of Ann Dunham Soetoro, the name she adopted after marrying her second husband, Lolo Soetoro. She also used the name during years of anthropology studies.

She received a bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate from UH.

University officials say the fund will support an endowed chair in the anthropology department and scholarships for students focused on that field and other social sciences.
