An unknown person tried to set off an improvised explosive device yesterday at the Waipahu Civic Center, police said.

Personnel from the center called police about 7 a.m. after finding a plastic Pine-Sol bottle partially filled with a dark gray, powdery substance and a partially burned hand towel underneath, police said.

A bomb squad from the Specialized Services Division was called in and removed the bottle. No one was injured and there were no damages.
