The Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance will provide videos to recruiters at the annual American Football Coaches Association conference next month.

Raiders legacy continues

If it seems unusual that Punahou doesn’t play in the ‘Iolani Classic any more, it shouldn’t.

In the five or so years since Punahou last played in the Classic, ‘Iolani has continued to attract top teams to its tourney, as well as elite talent to its boys basketball program. The defending state champion Raiders are ranked No. 2 in the Star-Advertiser Top 10, busy with the Classic over the past week. The tourney concludes today.

Punahou, ranked fourth, tipped off its tournament yesterday. The Buffanblu nearly upset No. 1 Kamehameha 10 days ago and are gaining momentum with the return of 6-foot-7 DeForest Buckner.

Though Punahou has a significantly larger enrollment, the Classic and a long legacy of success are trump cards in ‘Iolani’s hands. The treeline of coaches continues: recent graduates Ryan Hirata and Kyle Pape guided their intermediate team to a league title last week.

Lady Falcons running

The Kalani Lady Falcons are soaring again.

The girls basketball squad is 8-0 in Oahu Interscholastic Association play, running the floor and opponents ragged. Corie Kuia averaged 29 points per game last week in Kalani’s wins over Kailua and Waianae.

As a team, Kalani is averaging 76 points per game. The team’s lowest output was in a 60-56 win over McKinley nearly three weeks ago.
