Feds get $2.9M in Hawaii criminal, civil actions

Federal prosecutors collected about $2.9 million from criminal and civil actions in Hawaii during the most recent fiscal year.

The funds included $384,000 from Jerome Anches, a businessman who illegally stored a dry-cleaning solvent at his Sand Island warehouse.

Anches was fined $300,000 and ordered to pay the Environmental Protection Agency $84,000 to cover the costs of cleaning up the hazardous waste.

Gary Rodrigues paid $378,000 in restitution to the United Public Workers union he used to lead after he was convicted of defrauding its members.

Rodrigues is serving a five-year, four-month prison sentence.

The U.S. Attorney for Hawaii said in a statement that federal prosecutors nationwide collected $6.68 billion.
