Oak Hill captures ‘Iolani Classic title

They didn’t get many style points, but Oak Hill is all about the bottom line.
That comes with winning, of course. The Warriors of Virginia endured a slower pace by 14th-ranked Montverde Academy (Fla.) en route to 58-44 win last night in the final of the ‘Iolani Classic.
Guard Quinn Cook led the way with 22 points on 9-for-15 shooting. The Duke-bound guard also dished out five assists and earned most valuable player honors on the all-tournament team.
"I was fortunate enough to play for (Montverde coach Kevin) Sutton on our national team, so I knew what to expect," Cook said. "He has great teams. He’s a great coach."
Jordan Adams, named the tourney’s most outstanding player, led a solid frontcourt effort with nine points and 14 rebounds. Ben McLemore, who joined Adams and Cook on the all-tourney team, added nine points.
The Warriors, who moved up to No. 1 in the USA Today Super 25 last week, improved to 15-0. They outrebounded a big Montverde squad 29-19, but had some problems in the first half with the Eagles’ 2-1-2 press. The Warriors settled down in the third quarter, anchored by a superb man-to-man defense.

Center Daniel Gomis, a 6-foot-9 senior, nullified most of Montverde’s post offense. The Eagles, who shot 3-for-23 in the first half, finished 16-for-49 (32 percent).
The rest was a matter of patience and execution for Oak Hill, which captured its fifth Classic crown.
"Coach gave me the keys to the car," Cook said of Steve Smith, who recorded his 800th career win on Saturday against host ‘Iolani.
"I knew we were playing real good on the defensive end, so I felt good. We got going on offense in the second half, finally," Smith said.
A flurry of turnovers by Montverde sparked a 9-4 run in the third quarter, including alley-oop dunks from Cook to A.J. Hammons and the sky-walking McLemore.
Montverde got no closer than 11 the rest of the night.
Cook’s father, Ted, died two years ago. The guard wore a T-shirt bearing his father’s photo in pregame.
"If he was here, he’d say, ‘Stay humble,’ " Cook said.
