Sweet gift for blood donors
To encourage people to donate blood during a traditionally low turnout period, the Blood Bank of Hawaii is partnering with The Cookie Corner for its "Make Spirits Bright" promotion. People who give blood tomorrow through Jan. 2 will receive a coupon for a free bag of tropical fruit bars. According to the blood bank, hundreds of Hawaii patients daily count on donated blood for use in surgical procedures, cancer therapy and treatment of accident victims, anemia, ulcers, and mothers and newborns during delivery. Shoe shop showing off holiday season collections
Salvatore Ferragamo has unveiled two collections for the holiday season.
"Ferragamo’s Creations" launches today at Ferragamo’s Ala Moana store. The limited-edition collection of shoes and bags resurrects some of the most celebrated and iconic designs from the company’s archives of more than 13,000 styles.
At the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, Ferragamo will feature the brand’s new "Red Carpet" program, a made-to-order program for six styles of evening shoes worn by celebrities ranging from Angelina Jolie to Freida Pinto.
Women will be able to choose from red-carpet styles including pumps and sandals in a palette of 25 shades, with shoes delivered within six weeks.
The collections will be on display and available for purchase and to order through Jan. 9. The shoes and handbags are made entirely by hand using the original constructions, leathers and lasts, continuing the fashion history of the brand.
Ferragamo’s Creations was created in 2006 for the concept store next to the Salvatore Ferragamo Museum in Florence, Italy, which re-creates the 1950s ambience of the designer’s showroom. Ferragamo’s Creations is now available in a small number of select boutiques from Paris to Tokyo.
To date, the line has re-created some of the brand’s most iconic shoes, including the Malibu sandal, a multicolored crocheted raffia shoe from 1935. Salvatore Ferragamo was the first designer to use raffia in fashion designs by employing Florentine straw techniques. Raffia is still a centerpiece in many of the current collections, most recently seen in the Spring 2011 runway collection by creative director Massimiliano Giornetti.
Ferragamo’s Creations also includes some of the original bags that went on to symbolize the brand, including the top-handle crocodile bag, called the W bag for the house’s matriarch, Wanda Ferragamo. The W bag was reissued for Giornetti’s first women’s runway collection in the fall of 2010 and also seen on the Spring 2011 runway in raffia.
