Ferd's Words

Start the new year off right by sticking to these resolutions

Ferd Lewis

Remember that New Year’s resolution you committed to last night?

Heck, remember last night?

While you get reacquainted with that resolution you pledged to, here are a few we’d like to see others stick to for 2011:

UH football coach Greg McMackin: You know, it dawns on me that maybe we have to respect our bowl opponents before we can finally beat one of them. So, from here on out no more making fun of their victory dances or fight songs or booing highlight videos at banquets lest we end up being featured in more of them.

Tiger Woods: Can it have really been, what, four … five years since I’ve played a tournament in Hawaii? Time sure flies when you’ve been, uh, having fun. Anyway, I need to get back to play Hawaii. Hey, maybe, my pal Phil would like to come, too.

UH pay-per-view: Free viewing of UH road football games for all.

Rex Ryan: Next time I talk about toes, they will be the ones on my field-goal kicker.

Dave Shoji: One more national championship before I hang up the clipboard.

The state’s top college football prospects: An l-o-n-g look at UH this letter of intent signing period.

Long Beach State volleyball coach Brian Gimmillaro: Now that the Rainbow Wahine are going to be back in the Big West, time to start work on rekindling what was once the best rivalry in the sport.

Brett Favre: A break from texting for a while.

Ohio State: The NCAA rules tattooed on all incoming players.

Jets assistant coach Sal Alosi: I will keep my feet, knees and elbows to myself at all times — if I’m lucky enough to have an NFL job again.

Mississippi State men’s basketball team: When in Hawaii, we’ll leave the mixed martial arts to BJ Penn.

The Hawaii High School Athletic Association: A better classification system for state tournaments.

NCAA volleyball and softball selection committees: Darn, we almost forgot Hawaii IS a state. Maybe we should let them host more than the occasional regional.

Sony Open in Hawaii: An exemption for Tadd Fujikawa, pronto.

UH’s future Mountain West Conference football opponents: A promise not to look — or sound — pampered by those charter flights the Warriors will be providing through subsidies, oops, "cost-sharing."

The Legislature: A pledge to follow the example of UH’s conference membership "team" — M.R.C. Greenwood, Rockne Freitas, Jim Donovan, Howard Karr, Keith Amemiya and Virginia Hinshaw et al — and work in harmony to accomplish big things for the state.
