Mayor Arakawa, version 2, pledges to ‘move faster’

Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa, who is starting his second stint as the island’s chief executive, is vowing to "move faster and more efficiently" this time.

Arakawa was sworn in Sunday. He was mayor from 2003 through 2006, but his bid for re-election was defeated by Charmaine Tavares.

Likewise, Arakawa defeated Tavares’ bid for a second term in November.

According to the Maui News, Arakawa told about 500 people at his inauguration that he and aides have already met with schools, businesses, nonprofit groups, labor unions, the governor and other mayors.

He says there’s no learning curve needed because he’s held the post before.

The Maui County Council was to be sworn in yesterday.
