Big Island man dies after South Kohala crash
A Big Island man died yesterday from injuries he sustained the truck he was driving struck a light post and a tree in South Kohala.
The accident occurred just after 11:30 p.m. when the victim ran off the side of Lua Kula street in Waikoloa Village and first hit the pole and then a tree.
The name of the victim driving a 2006 Toyota pickup truck is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of the next of kin.
The victim was pinned in the vehicle and had to be extricated by Fire Department personnel. He was not wearing a seat belt.
Police believe that speed and alcohol were factors in this crash.
This is the third traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with three at this time last year.
