Chow out as UCLA’s coordinator?

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Johnson will become the offensive coordinator at UCLA, replacing Norm Chow, according to Scout.com.

However, UCLA officials did not confirm the hiring and Johnson did not immediately return a phone call left on his cell phone.

Chow, a former Punahou athlete who had coaching stints at Brigham Young, USC and with the Tennessee Titans, is due $1 million over the next two years.

LSU gives Miles a new deal

Les Miles made it clear, in his own particular way, that he is living in the present.

His nostalgia for Michigan, where he played, and his enduring pride in his alma mater could not outweigh the relationships he’s built in the past six seasons at LSU, where he’s won 62 games and five bowls, including the 2007 national title.

"I’m one of those guys that believe where you are at is where you live your life," Miles said yesterday, shortly after LSU announced that the Tigers’ coach had agreed to a new contract that would keep him at the school for the next seven seasons.

The announcement of Miles’ new deal came two days after Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon flew to Baton Rouge to meet with Miles about the Wolverines’ coaching vacancy that has since been filled by Brady Hoke.

Miles’ annual salary will remain the same at a little more than $3.75 million. However, his new deal gives him three additional years and more opportunities win bonuses based on postseason success.

Long new SDSU coach

Rocky Long, San Diego State’s defensive coordinator, was named the school’s head coach yesterday.

His promotion comes after Brady Hoke was hired away by Michigan a day earlier.

Long joined Hoke’s staff in December 2008, weeks after he resigned following 11 seasons as New Mexico’s head coach.

Michigan introduces Hoke

Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon is learning that Brady Hoke is a pretty popular coach.

"He is clearly a players’ coach," Brandon said yesterday at a news conference. "Unlike some other coaches, it’s not about him, it’s about his team."

Clearly, Hoke has landed his dream job. "We would’ve walked to the University of Michigan," Brandon said.

Oklahoma State stars stay

All-American receiver Justin Blackmon and quarterback Brandon Weeden are returning to Oklahoma State, giving the Cowboys another season with the two key playmakers in one of the nation’s most dynamic offenses.

Blackmon, the Biletnikoff Award winner as the nation’s top receiver who set an NCAA record with at least 100 yards receiving and a touchdown in 12 straight games, and Weeden helped propel the Cowboys to their first 11-win season and the No. 13 ranking.

Notre Dame’s Floyd stays

Michael Floyd, Notre Dame’s leading receiver this past season and one of the top pass-catchers in school history, has decided to return to the Fighting Irish for his senior season instead of declaring for the NFL Draft. He is listed at 6 feet 3 and 227 pounds.
