FCC allows Sirius to start satellite radio service on Oahu

Federal regulators have given Sirius XM Radio Inc. permission to temporarily establish a 2,000-watt transmitter in Hawaii.

The action allows the satellite radio company to broadcast to customers on Oahu.

The Federal Communications Commission order also allows Sirius to take similar action in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau, Alaska.

The decision followed approval of more general rules by the commission itself in May.

Sirius has sought permission to set up “terrestrial repeaters” in Hawaii and Alaska for several years. It is likely to next seek permanent permission for the transmitter.

Broadcasters’ groups in Washington D.C., Hawaii and Alaska opposed the request.
